In a setback to CPM in Kerala, former party MLA S Rajendran has on Saturday announced that he would join the BJP soon.

S Rajendran said in Idukki on Saturday that his entry into the BJP would take place at a function to be held in Munnar at the convenience of the BJP leaders. The leader had held discussions with the party’s state president, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in Thiruvananthapuram the other day following which he openly revealed that he has decided to join the BJP.

Earlier, Rajendran had gone to Delhi and held discussions with BJP Kerala prabhari Prakash Javadekar. He had been keeping a distance from the CPM for the last four years.

A CPM MLA for 15 years, Rajendran’s relationship with the party strained after the 2021 Assembly elections. It was alleged that he had worked against LDF candidate Raja in Devikulam. A party-level inquiry later found the allegations to be true, following which Rajendran was suspended from the CPM in 2022 for a period of one year. Though the party leaders made repeated efforts to bring him back into the CPM fold, Rajendran was reluctant to do so.

Rajendran was in the news recently for seeking votes for BJP candidates in the local body elections. He went out to seek votes in the plantation areas including Idamalakudy and Devikulam.
